The Humanitarian Law Center Kosovo (HLCK) expresses its regret for the removal of the memorial stone of Mother Pashke Markaj in Korenica

25.07.2023, 09:21

This stone was placed in 2004, as a form of memorialization for the tragic event of self-sacrifice of mother Pashke, who burned herself after burying her two sons who went missing on 27 April 1999

and their bodies were found in the mass graves in Batajnica.

Memorialization, as a means of enriching the societal collective memory, plays an important role in dealing with the past, through the commemoration of past events and by remembering and honoring

the victims. Furthermore, memorialization contributes to the education, awareness and reflection of the society regarding the events of the past.

HLCK invites the relevant institutions of the Republic of Kosovo to establish a professional commission for handling and assessment of all memorials in Kosovo, including those erected through private

initiatives and in private areas. The memorials assessed by this commission as important for the commemoration of the past, with special emphasis on a dignified commemoration of the victims,

should be taken under the care of the relevant state institutions, namely under the management of the Agency for the Management of Memorial Complexes.
